BIOGRAPHY
Anastasia Tumanova is a Russian-American ceramic artist who currently lives and works in Berkeley, California. Her ceramic work is inspired by the flora and natural surroundings of her home in California. She captures the spirit of nature by translating its shapes, patterns, textures, and colors into abstract, dimensional artworks that venerate nature's beauty and bring the outdoors inside.
Tumanova has shown her work at Minnesota Street Project, West Coast Craft, Rare Device, and Oakland First Friday. Some of her corporate clients include The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Google, and Walt Disney World. Anastasia received her Bachelor of Art from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2009, and worked for a decade as a graphic designer before she became a full time ceramic artist. Her training as a designer has informed her process and graphic approach to working with clay. Anastasia's artwork is influenced by traditional crafts: ceramics, enamelware, lacquerware, woodwork, and textiles.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My earliest memory of seeing art in my natural surroundings was observing a strand of red currants at my family's dacha in Moscow, Russia and feeling an outpouring of delight. I experience joyful moments like this everyday when observing elegant strands of Eucalyptus, bobbing heads of Nasturtium, and sunny yellow buttercups. I channel these moments of delight in my ceramic arrangements, a medium that allows me to capture color, form, texture, movement, and dimensionality. My artwork is playful, dynamic, and calming. When I create, I improvise like a musician; every artwork is made emotively in the present moment.
